What is Iyengar Yoga?

Iyengar Yoga emphasizes the development of strength, stamina, flexibility, balance, and concentration. In an Iyengar Yoga class, students are encouraged to penetrate deeply into the experience of each pose. This focus on the subtleties of each posture is the hallmark of this school of yoga, developed by B.K.S. Iyengar of Pune, India, who is still teaching at 86.

Also specific to Iyengar Yoga is the use of props to adapt the yoga poses for the requirements of different bodies and physical abilities. The props, such as belts, chairs, blocks, and blankets, are used to maximize opening and awareness throughout the body, to stimulate blood flow to the organs, and to accommodate special needs such as injuries or structural imbalances.
